The Lovers

“The Lovers” is the moment in the journey where connection becomes a choice rather than a longing. When I turned to the Lovers tarot card, I wasn’t drawn only to its associations with romance or harmony, I was drawn to the deeper truth beneath it: that love is beautiful, yes, but it is also demanding.

For me, this track became an exploration of the bittersweet nature of intimacy. The joy of feeling understood, and the tremor that comes with choosing to trust. The Lovers card teaches that true union is not about losing yourself, but about willingly giving something of yourself in order to grow both individually and together. It echoes the idea that sacrifice, when rooted in love rather than fear, can be transformative rather than diminishing.

Musically, I wanted the song to hold that delicate balance: the warmth of connection paired with the shadows of doubt that naturally accompany it. It’s tender, but it’s honest. Loving someone is breath-taking, but it is also brave.

“The Lovers” marks the point in the journey where the heart expands. And in doing so, becomes both stronger and more exposed. It’s a reminder that love is a choice made with both the soul and the spine: gentle in its offering, powerful in its impact, and always, in some way, a sacrifice.

It asks something of you. It changes you. It requires opening doors you thought were locked, and sometimes closing others you were once certain would stay open.

The card is often mistaken for a symbol of easy affection, but in tarot, The Lovers speaks just as much about commitment, accountability, and sacrifice. It’s the crossroads where you choose not only another person, but also the version of yourself who stands beside them. Every connection reshapes us in some way, and this card reminds us that love is not passive- it’s an active, conscious decision to intertwine your path with another.

When I wrote “The Lovers”, I wanted to sit honestly with that duality. Love is exquisite in its tenderness, but it can also be frightening in its vulnerability. There is beauty in letting someone in, but there is a quiet fear in knowing that doing so means letting certain parts of your old life fall away. The song explores that tension: the desire to open your heart fully, and the hesitation that rises when you realise that opening means changing, bending, compromising. Love always involves a gentle kind of surrender.
